Dog A.I.D. works with physically Disabled people to coach them to train their own pet dog, utilising the bond that already exists between the owner and their pet, to become an Assistance Dog partnership accredited by Assistance Dogs International (ADI).
Applicants to the programme and their dog are assessed as to whether they are eligible to start training with us. If the partnership is eligible and there is a volunteer in their geographical area, training can commence. All training uses positive, rewards based techniques.
The partnership trains regularly with their volunteer trainer and practices the techniques and skills learned between sessions. They will work their way through three progressive levels of assessment culminating in a public access test. Training through the Dog A.I.D. programme can take up to 2 years.
Partnerships are reassessed by Dog A.I.D. annually to ensure that they continue to reach the standards required for ADI accreditation.
This fabulous video was developed by the Reech agency based in Shropshire. Dog A.I.D. was chosen as Reech's Charity of the Year in 2024 and they created this beautiful video showcasing some of our Assistance Dog partnerships
