Dog A.I.D. works with physically Disabled people to coach them to train their own pet dog, utilising the bond that already exists between the owner and their pet, to become an Assistance Dog partnership accredited by Assistance Dogs International (ADI).
Applicants to the programme and their dog are assessed as to whether they are eligible to start training with us. If the partnership is eligible and there is a volunteer in their geographical area, training can commence. All training uses positive, rewards based techniques.
The partnership trains regularly with their volunteer trainer and practices the techniques and skills learned between sessions. They will work their way through three progressive levels of assessment culminating in a public access test. Training through the Dog A.I.D. programme can take up to 2 years.
Partnerships are reassessed by Dog A.I.D. annually to ensure that they continue to reach the standards required for ADI accreditation.
This fabulous video was put together by Keith Sleightholm, Managing Director and Co-Founder of ProTrainings Europe and Jim Devlin, our Treasurer who sadly passed away in 2016. It is a wonderful insight into just how our clients work together with their dogs and the life changing results this can bring.
This lovely little video was created by Yvonne Coleclough to demonstrate how her assistance dog helps her.

Dog
A.I.D. is unique from other assistance dog organisations in that it empowers clients to train their own pet dog to assist them with daily tasks tailored to their needs. The charity provides the client with one of their 84 approved personal dog trainers who coaches them in modern, safe, reward-based dog training methods over 1-2 years.
Dog A.I.D. training usually occurs at the client’s home and in their local environment. Building on the bond that already exists between client and dog, the trainer provides the owner with the knowledge to train other tasks that give the client confidence and a real sense of achievement.
Once qualified, each Assistance Dog receives their own recognisable Dog A.I.D red jacket, provided by Natural Instinct and is kept up to date with the latest news in the biannual Members and Supporters Newsletter, funded by the brand.
Since 2018, the charity has trained over 111 Assistance Dogs.
“We have worked with Dog A.I.D for many years and continue to be amazed by their work. Assistance Dogs are truly remarkable, offering much-needed support to those with physical disabilities.
Not only helping with daily tasks that many of us take for granted but also helping emotionally to decrease feelings of loneliness and dependence while increasing confidence.
We are proud to support Dog A.I.D and encourage everyone to learn more about the charity’s fantastic work.”
Phil Keen, Managing Director at Natural Instinct
