What is Dog AID?

Dog Aid (Assistance In Disability) is a national voluntary organisation, which provides specialised training for people with physical disabilities and their own pet dog.

Dog AID does not actually supply dogs. What Dog AID does do is to help people train their own dog to be generally obedience trained as good pets and to help around the house. If the dog's temperament is of a high standard and sufficient training is carried out then the dog and owner can be assessed for full Assistance status, allowing owner and dog to go out into public places. The standard required for this is very high. The owner is assessed on their ability to control the dog using positive training and commands and also on their consideration for the dog and other people. The dog is assessed for a high ability to respond to different situations and to a variety of commands. As well as being a help to its owner the dog must be exemplary at all times so that the good name of all Assistance Organisations is maintained, allowing this necessary work to continue.

The main difference between dog AID and many other assistance groups is that the disabled owner actually learns how to train their own dog. Generally all the training is carried out by the owner with supervision from a specially trained instructor.

Dog AID training is designed to give a measure of independence and provide owners with the knowledge to train other tasks. This allows them to adapt the training to their own needs with an instructor, who is able to give advice should it be requested.

We can accommodate adults over 18 years of age. Unfortunately we cannot assist people under this age at present.

Information About Assistance Dog Jackets or Jackets for Dogs that are in Training

Jackets for dogs for the above purpose are only available from the organisations that train dogs for specific purposes and are only available if you and your dog are enrolled on the scheme run by that organisation. There are strict regulations about the training that a dog must have undergone before being allowed to go into Public Places where ordinary dogs are not allowed. Dogs under training must be accompanied by a trainer employed by the organisation.
Assistance Dogs and their owners have to pass a test to a very high standard, having first followed a training programme by the organisation in question.
